Mighty Mia

Meet Mighty Mia! She is a witty, outgoing, fun-loving seventeen year old with a “prove them wrong” attitude. She loves spending time with her friends and family. She is also an Indianapolis Colts Super fan. She and I have one huge thing in common – we both cheer for #45 the most.

Mia’s journey of fighting for her life started when she was just six months old. After a year and a half of thinking Mia was just having spells where she held her breath the doctors determined she was actually having seizures caused by a brain tumor in her right temporal lobe. They treated her seizures and monitored her tumor growth for a few years but when Mia was seven they decided brain surgery was necessary. They removed a portion of the tumor but the other part would have to be monitored in the years to come.

In 2012 Mia had a Petscan to see how things were progressing. It was determined that Mia’s tumor had gotten worse but this time surgery was not in the cards. She was told she either needed proton therapy everyday for six and a half weeks or six months was the longest she would live. A recent scan had shown it had spread down her spine and throughout her whole brain. So proton therapy it was!

After the proton therapy things looked good – until Mia had a stroke. In July 2013 Mia really had to fight for her life. She underwent two brain surgeries and spent twelve days in the ICU. After two weeks of rehab, Mia was on the mend and homebound!

In November 2014 she had another upsetting scan. But Mia chooses to live each day to it’s fullest and strives to prove the doctors and scans wrong. She is taking each day as it comes and praying for the best.
